In 2023 Frictional Games released the latest entry of the Amnesia franchise: the Bunker! Bringing a new spin to their classic formula, with non-linear level design and progression, combined with ‘the beast’, a monstrous new antagonist that reacts and adapts to the player’s actions.

We sit down with Fredrik Olsson and Max Lidbeck from @frictionalgames to discuss how the game came to be, the design of the creature, and the ways they had to work around limitations in their game engine in order to achieve their design goals.

Explore the AI behind Amnesia: The Bunker (2023) and its terrifying monster, The Beast. With exclusive insights from Frictional Games’ Fredrik Olsson and Max Lidbeck, we break down how the team built a non-linear, systemic horror experience powered by procedural elements, dynamic sound-driven behaviour, and a 40-state finite state machine.

Learn how The Beast differs from Alien: Isolation’s Xenomorph, how it tracks you through the bunker walls, reacts to light and noise, destroys the environment, and uses hidden systems like escalation values, interest ranges, and custom navigation to create unpredictable encounters.

Perfect for fans of horror design, game AI, and Frictional’s unique approach to emergent gameplay.
